Choosing a Domain Name

A domain name is basically the address of your site that users will enter in their web browser (like Internet Explorer or Netscape) to access your web site.

For example this site's domain name is siteFX.co.uk

The ".co.uk" extension (called TLD, top-level domains) is most common for U.K. web sites. Commercial organizations commonly use .com and non-profit organizations might prefer using .org

Unfortunately, you will find that most common words and sentences are already in use, especially in the .com space, so you will need to be creative with your domain name. More choices are available with new TLDs (such as .biz .name or .blah). SiteFX can help you choose a suitable domain name by producing a list of available options best suited to your requirements.

Registering with Nominet

As your web hosts, we can register a domain name for you with Nominet - the UK's Internet names organisation. The minimum period for which a domain name can be registered with siteFX is 2 years. We will also make sure to renew your domain name before it expires, or you may lose it to someone else.

If you don't yet have a web site but there is a domain name that you want now, we can register it and use domain parking which is a cheap way to display an "Under Construction" message.

Once your hosting account is activated, we modify the name servers and it then takes around 24-48 hours for the changes to propagate across the Internet. Once this happens, your new web site will be accessible by using your domain name.
